About me

Julian Fietkau

My name is Julian Fietkau, I am 32 years old and currently employed as a research assistant at the Universität der Bundeswehr München.

I have studied Computer Science (B.Sc., M.Sc.) and Human-Computer Interaction at the Universität Hamburg and I feel firmly rooted in those fields. My ability to quickly comprehend rules and interrelations even in complex systems, to abstract and to model them, enables me to feel at home in many areas of computer science.

In that big area, I am particularly interested in usability and usability engineering. As a creator of (software) systems, I consider myself responsible and committed to give users the best possible experience. This includes the question what "best possible" means in this context. To me, iterative development including real user input is the baseline, and I follow other ideas in the field (e.g. Emotional Design, Gamification) with great interest.

At the same time, I consider myself a software developer, who is competent with concepts like design patterns, algorithms and source code. I have worked on software projects alone and in teams, and I am open towards all kinds of technologies and languages.

I take great joy in passing on my knowledge, and I like to give talks and hold workshops about vastly different topics. I feel connected to the principles of OpenAccess, Creative Commons and the Free Culture movement, I publicize all my content on this website under free licenses whenever I can.
